CASE STUDY
Better Outcomes
Consider the case of the Chinese patient who was being treated for cancer. After several treatment sessions, the doctor saw no improvement. In fact, the patient was getting worse. The interpreter remembered a cultural practice in China of some people drinking certain types of herb teas and brought it to the attention of the doctor. Thanks to the presence of mind of the trained interpreter who acted as culture broker in this situation, the doctor was able to question the patient about this practice and discovered that the herb tea that she was drinking was interacting with the chemotherapy. Once the patient stopped drinking the tea, they began to see great improvement after the chemotherapy sessions. In this case, the trained interpreter who understood her role as culture broker and acted accordingly, helped to save the life of a patient.
